Anthony Venn-Brown grew up in an era where homosexual men were imprisoned or mental health professionals tried to cure then through aversion or shock treatment. In his late teens Anthony committed his life to Christ believing God would do the miracle he longed for; to become 'normal'. Exorcisms, gay conversion therapy, 40-day fasts were some of his desperate attempts to become straight. As a married man and father of two, Anthony followed his call to the ministry and eventually became a leader in Australia's Assemblies of God and popular preacher in Australia’s mega-churches, such as Hillsong. After 22 years of struggle, meeting Jason forced Anthony to make the toughest decision of his life; maintain the façade he had created or be true to himself and lose it all. Tired of feeling torn and fragmented, he confessed and came out, and the results of that confession took him on a lonely journey that made him who he is today.
Anthony's autobiography 'A Life of Unlearning' has enabled thousands of gay and lesbian people from church backgrounds to find resolution of their faith and sexuality and been a source of information and inspiration for others. Touched by the many emails he received from readers of his story.
Anthony is now the founder and director of Ambassadors and Bridge Builders International (ABBI) which focuses on education, consultancy and creating dialogues both in the church and the LGBT community.
In acknowledgement of Anthony's impact he was voted one of The 25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians in 2007 and 2009, a finalist for the 2011 ACON’s Community Hero Award and awarded Life Membership to the SGLBA for Outstanding Service.
In 2020 Anthony was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the LGBTIQ community
