Benjamin Brewster

The Right Reverend Benjamin Brewster, D.D. (B.D., General Theological Seminary, New York City, 1886; B.A., Yale University, 1882), was the Episcopal Bishop of Maine and Missionary Bishop of Western Colorado. He also served three years as Dean of St. Mark's Cathedral, Salt Lake City, Utah, prior to his 1909 consecration as the 242nd bishop of the Episcopal Church.

While at Yale, he was a member of the Skull & Bones Society, and a contributor to The Yale Literary Magazine.

A direct descendant of Plymouth Colony Elder William Brewster, the Pilgrim colonist leader and spiritual elder of the Plymouth Colony, R.Rev. Brewster's involvement with the American Civil Liberties Union and other economic, political, and religious liberal causes led him to resign from the Maine Society of Mayflower Descendants in 1937.

“In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.”
