Emerson Roy West

Emerson Roy West, 72, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2003 in Provo, Utah after a long battle with heart disease.

He was born Sept 25, 1930 in Logan, UT. He was the first of seven children born to Roy A. and Geneva Rose Day West. Emerson married Gloria Kay Driggs on June 18, 1962 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, and they were blessed with five children and nine grandchildren.

He graduated from East High School in Salt Lake, received his bachelor's degree in Sociology and his master's degree in Speech from Brigham Young University.

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as gospel doctrine instructor, High Priest group leader, assistant, and secretary, stake historian, stake missionary, stake Sunday school president, MIA President, ward executive secretary and Priesthood organist. He served an LDS Mission to Uruguay/Paraguay. He served as assistant chaplain in the United States Army in Ger-many. Emerson is the author of several published books: Latter-day Prophets, Profiles of the Presidents, How to Speak in Church, When you Speak in Church and Vital Quotations.

Emerson lived in Logan, Price, St. George, Salt Lake City and Provo, UT; Madison, WI; Durham, NC; San Francisco and San Jose, CA.

Emerson taught in the Campbell Union High School District in San Jose, CA for 35 years at Blackford, Leigh, Westmont, Del Mar and Branham High Schools, where he taught Speech, English and Spanish. He also taught evenings at West Valley College in Saratoga, CA. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching his sons and daughters play basketball. In 1948, Emerson played basketball on the team that won the all-Church basketball championship.

Emerson is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Provo; his three daughters Jennifer (Michael) Mitchell of Gorham, Maine, Julie Ann (Marcus) Burton of Provo, Janelle (Lance) Olivas of Provo, his two sons, Jerry (Rachael) West and Jonathan West of Provo, nine grandchildren: Alex, Hayley, Jaxon, and Caron West, Megan, Kelsey and Libby Mitchell, Faith and Heathar Burton; four sisters, Rose Marie (Richard) Nichols of Seattle, WA, Sylvia (David) Fairbanks of Bethesda, MD, Viola (Dennis) Farnsworth of Orem, Gloria Kemker of Sandy, and one brother, Stephen (Marcia) West of Redondo Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff and friends at VistaCare Hospice and Orem Nursing for the tireless care rendered to Emerson.

A celebration of his life will be 11 a.m. Wed. Aug 27, 2003 at the Pleasant View 6th Ward Chapel (Rock Canyon Chapel), 2445 N. 650 E. (Timpview Drive), Provo. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., Provo, 6-8 p.m. on Tues. Aug 26, or Wed. at the Ward Chapel 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be at the East Lawn Ceme-tery, Provo, with full military rites.
