After working for fifty years in the restaurant business, I retired. My wife and I live in a small seaside community on the California coast.

Now, I write historical fiction, and my first novel was published on May 28, 2019. It is titled High in the Bavarian Alps.

Although I never gave much thought to becoming an author, I have always loved historical fiction. So, I started writing one day. Forty-four chapters later, my novel emerged as a hardcover book of 630 pages.

Of course, I struggled at first. Then, I recalled the 60s and 70s when young adults, including me, were involved with sex, marijuana, and rock ‘n’ roll. My most memorable experiences happened in Bavaria, hanging out, skiing, playing bar games and other sports with my new friends. We were all responsible people who worked hard and played hard. It was a fun and wild adventure!”

Having spent five years in Europe, I am familiar with most locations described in the book. I like history and did extensive research to support the events which occur in the story. However, it appears I do not mind breaking a few rules and coloring outside the lines, literally and figuratively. 

High in the Bavarian Alps is a fascinating tale woven around Lucas Gary, the protagonist. Most events in the book involve extreme lifestyles during the early 1970s and take place in an American military playground—the beautiful, fairy-tale setting of the Bavarian Alps. Lucas meets Interesting characters who come from around the world to work for the Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC). Historic hotels which survived World War II became AFRC facilities and served as vacation resorts for military personnel and their families.

If you like historical fiction, I think you will love this novel. It is a delightful blend of history, friendship, sports, romance, adventure, and terror.
