She began work at General Mills in 1969, developing and leading a nutrition program. She continued to work in the area of motivation for Dale Carnegie Training, where, at the time, she was the only woman in their sales force. During the 80s, Janie delivered self-esteem and affirmation workshops to parenting groups, chemical dependency groups and to teens and teachers across the country.
She has been living one day at a time since 1976 in a Twelve Step Recovery Program. She spends her summers in Wautoma, Wisconsin, as she did as a child, but lives in Victoria, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. Her daughter Janet is the mother of her two grandchildren. Her sons, Joe and Jeff, live in the Twin Cities and San Francisco, respectively. Janie has been the CEO of her own company, Creativity "No Limits", Inc., which has arranged her talks, seminars and workshops since 1976.
