This author is not afraid to tackle difficult subjects: living with a deaf parent (Of Sound Mind), facing the consequences of a criminal act (Bad), or questioning one's sexuality (Eight Seconds). But Jean Ferris is also adept at writing comedy, historical fiction, and romance. What's most interesting is that she didn't publish her first novel until she was in her mid-40s. Yet she's never forgotten the intense feelings and changes of her own teenage years. Critics as well as teen readers have seen the evidence of that in her writing and have honored her novels with a number of awards, from Best Books for Young Adults to various state and National Book Award nominations.
“His recent dungeon experience had persuaded him that opportunites for good things should be grabbed and not postponed. You never knew when you wouldn't be around anymore.”
“As it so often does, an impulsive, daring suddenly - and too late - seemed seriously flawed in its conception and its inability to be retracted.”
“You go to grab your moments and squeeze them dry. Enjoy them while you’re having them. Then remember and enjoy them all over again in your memory. And try to have more good ones than bad ones —- or at least remember more of the good ones.”
“C: What do you get when a giant sneezes?Out of the way. - Marigold”
“Secrets have a way of making themselves felt, even before you know there's a secret.”
“As wonderful as dogs can be, they are famous for missing the point.”
“Rats. Rats, mice, and rodents.”
“Horatio leaned toward her, "What is the secret of joy?"Mousey thought for a moment. "Doing what you like best." Of course. How simple. And how true.”

“Christian looked at her fondly. When she was happy, so was he.”
“This is some kind of life, isn't it? Something good happening inside something bad.”
“We'll burn that bridge when we come to it!”
“You should work extra hard to be your best selves. True evil has a hard time operating in the face of strenuous manifestations of good. Especially if you act right away. The longer you let evil hang around and get a grip on you, the harder it is to get rid of it.”
“But it's tempting, isn't it, to give somebody like Olympia or Fenleigh a taste of their own medicine? To get even?'I agree it's tempting. *Really* tempting. But it doesn't solve anything. It just perpetuates the problem by making us as bad as them. And we don't need any more of them, do we?”
“It was good, too, to remember how hard a lot of people had to work to keep a kingdom running well, and that it was simply good manners to let them know, from time to time, how valued they were.”
“And they lived happily (aside from a few normal disagreements, misunderstandings, pouts, silent treatments, and unexpected calamities) ever after.”
“Knock, Knock.""Who's there?""Olive.""Olive who?""Olive...ooh. I love you, too," he said, figuring it out. "You can tell me that one anytime you like." He folded her into his arms.”
“Congratulations. You have met your conscience. In my experience, the world is divided between those who have one and those who don't. And the ones with one are divided into those who will act on their conscience and those who won't. Those who will are, I'm afraid, the smallest category. They will *jeito*. It's Brazilian Portuguese. It means to find a way to get something done, no matter what the obstacles.”
“I'm starting to believe that happily ever after includes people doing things that upset each other. We all get cranky, or impatient, or worried, or careless enough to do or say things that hurt someone else. Like it or not, that's normal. We can't blame it all on Olympia's bad energy. The important part is that we feel sorry about what we've done and make up for it. That's something Olympia never did.”
“I figured that when there's no way of knowing what the future holds it's just as easy to believe it'll be good as to believe it'll be bad.”
“I know it's important to do more than just complain when there's something you don't like. You need to try to do something about it, or you're nothing but a whiner.”
“No matter how good somebody's life looks from the outside, you can be sure there's something about it you wouldn't want to have in your life.”
“She said, "As long as we're with each other--""We know we're in exactly the right place," he finished.”
“That cup of tea is definately not down your alley”
