John Harington

Sir John Harington

One of Queen Elizabeth I's godchildren, John Harington was educated at Eton College and subsequently matriculated at King's College, University of Cambridge where he graduated with a BA in 1577/78 and MA in 1581, was appointed High Sheriff of Somerset in 1591, and served under the Earl of Essex during Elizabeth's wars against the Irish during which he was knighted, in 1599, in the field.
