“And the sweetest, spellbound feeling spilling from her heart.”
“We meet. We always meet, somehow we're always thrown together, no matter where I go, no matter how I try to distance myself from you. It never matters. You always find me.”
“Trial by fire.' Roland whistled, patting Luce on the back. 'Show no fear.”
“Scared ya, did I? Aw, that's sweet. Don't worry the shocks won't kill me," she whispered. "They only make me stronger. Anyway, it was worth it to give that cow a black eye, ya know?”
“Arriane sized her up, tapping one finger against her lips. "Perfect," she said, stepping forward to loop her arm through Luce's. "I was just thinking I could really use a new slave.”
“Cam stepped into the clearing. His eyes were rimmed with a thick, shimmering gold shadow, and it shone on his face in the moonlight, making him look like a wildcat.”
“...In the rolling sea of new state, new school, new dangers everywere, Daniel was the only rock she had to hold on to.And he was adout to leave her?...”
“Oh yes, we're going to brawl, baby. Over you. Again.”
“i"ll always catch you when you fall." -Daniel ,, torment”
“Ms. Sophia was evil bananas.”
“Across the room, she heard a loud clatter. She looked up to see that Roland ahd fallen out of his chair. The last time she'd glanced at him, he'd been leaning back on tw legs, and now it looked like gravity had finally won.As he stumbled to his feet, Arriane went to help him. She glanced over and offered a hurried wave. "He's okay!" she called cheerily. "Get up!" she whispered loudly to Roland.”
“Arianne had her feet up on the table, wearing a striped conductor's cap.Arriane was fixated on the game. A chocolate cigar bobbed between her lips as she contemplated her next move. Roland was giving Arianne the hawk eye."Checkmate, bitch," Arianne said triumphantly, knocking over Roland's king.”
“Gabbe jumped up and seized the cocanut first, giving its contents a sniff. "Arriane, she has just been through a trama," she scolded.Arriane tossed her shoulders back. "Precisely why she needs something with a kick," she argued, holding the tray possessively while she and Gabbe engaged in a stare-down."Fine," Arriane said, looking away from Gabbe.”
“Now lemme get this straight," she said in a throaty, nasal voice. "You put the lime in the cocanut and drink 'em both up--whoa, long faces. What am I interrupting?”
“And while Luce dreamed below of the most glorious wings unfurling-the likes of which she'd never seen before-two angels in the rafters shook hands.”
“STANFORD LOCKWOOD WORLD'S BEST FATHER”
“I think the most tortured place in hell should be reserved not for traitors, but... for cowards. The weakest, most spineless losers. Because it seems to me that traitors? At least they made a choice. But cowards? They just run around biting their fingernails, totally afraid to do anything. Which is totally worse.”
“Will you tell me again?" he asked, almost shyly. "Will you tell me what I am?""You're an angel," she repeated slowly, surprised to see Daniel close his eyes and moan in pleasure, almost as if they were kissing. "I'm in love with an angel.”
“Cam's wings were so bright they were almost blinding as they pulsed. "Holy Hell," Callie whispered, blinking."More or less," Arriane said”
“this lifeless paper, cruel imposter, was the only to take her with him”
“People who are chronically tardy never understand the many ways in which they screw up the schedules of people who are punctual and 'normal'...”
“...and Jack, who felt like he was on the cusp of being able to read minds and thought it would be all right if Luce wrote him down for that. ("I sense that you're okay with that, am I right?" He made a gun out of his fingers and clicked his tongue.)”
“Rule number 2 - don't listen to me!" Arriane laughed, "I'm certifiably insane!”
“The only way to survive eternity is to be able to appreciate each moment.”
“Loneliness in a crowd of people was the worst kind of loneliness, but she couldn't help it.”
“The tender pressure of his lips soothed her, like a warm drink in the dead of the winter, when every part of her felt so cold.”
“Because love and hate were supposed to stand cleanly on opposite sides of the spectrum. The division seemed as clear as...well, angels and demons would once have seemed to her. Not anymore.”
“No, he hadn’t just dragged her to California. He’d dragged her into a cursed eternity. A burden thatshould have been his alone to bear.”
“Daniel had ruined that couple’s life. Killed their daughter. All because he’d been some hotshot angel who saw something he wanted and went after it.”
“They could steam up windows with their kisses, but as soon as they started usingtheir mouths for other things—like talking—everything got so complicated.”
“Checkmate, bitch. -Arriane”
“You're still here," he whispered."They couldn't drag me away.”
“This estrogen force field needs to dissipate... Move along. All of you. Now!”
“Jealous?' Luce asked. They were alone now. She threw her arms around his broad shoulders and looked deep into his violet eyes. 'Why would you be jealous?''Because,' he said, rubbing his hands across her back. 'Your dance card is full. For all eternity.”
“In this lifetime you're nothing more than you appear to be: a stupid, selfish, ignorant, spoiled little girl who thinks the world lives or dies on whether she gets to go out with some good-looking boy at school...I'd still relish this moment...killing you.”
“Get to part B, Daniel. Think fast. Patience is a virtue, and you know how Cam feels about those.”
“End times aren't supposed to be very pretty.”
“He dipped her low and kissed her fiercely, as if he were angry, and each time his lips left hers, even just for half a second, the most parching thirst ran through her, making her cry out.”
“She felt free of everything that weighted her down on Earth. Free of danger, free of any pain she'd ever felt. Free of gravity. And so in love.”
“When he turned to face her, the drawn look on his face was one of absolute agony as if Luce had just ripped his heart out”
“He had the innate sense that something bad was just around the bend, but a hope that something incredible was waiting in the distance. It had to be.His burning love for her cursed through him until he felt so full he didn’t know whether he would fit through the portal.”
“Oh that moment when Daniel thought he’d lost her to Cam’s starshot! His wings hat felt too heavy to lift. Colder than death. In that instant , he’d given up all hope.”
“No” Daniel cried “ No, no, no”Luce’s heart ached as he tore at his hair, spun in circle and let his wings bloom out to their full size.”
“Daniel took Luce’s hands in his. He closed his eyes, inhaled, and let his massive white wings unfurl. Fully extended , they would have filled the entire kitchen , but Daniel reined them in, close to his body. They shimmered and glowed and looked altogether too beautiful. Luce reached out and touched them with both hands. Warm and satin smooth on the outside, but inside, full of power. She could feel it coursing through Daniel, into her. She felt so close to him, understood him completely—As If they had become one.”
“I know he would die if you died, Luce”
“It felt so goodjust to be held”
“Love never dies.”
“Don't go," she whispered, her eyes closed. It was all happening too fast. She couldn't give Daniel up. Not yet. She didn't think she ever could.”
“What if the person you were meant to be with could never be yours?”
