Yasir Arafat, also Yasser Arafat, originally Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat as Qudwa al-Hussaeini, led the Palestine liberation organization and shared the Nobel Prize for peace of 1994 with Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres; people in 1996 elected him as the first president of the authority, the newly formed self-rule government.
This national chairman in 1959 founded and led Fatah, the paramilitary group and political party.
