Zane Kotker's first editor, Bob Gottlieb at Knopf, told her she could choose to write the same novel over and over and so develop a readership -- or she could try whatever she wanted with each new book. Those were the days!
She chose the more varied course, producing two historical novels, one study of young motherhood, an investigation of a cultural phenomenon, and the story of her father's life.
Her novels have been acclaimed by The New Yorker and The New York Times. Her short stories have appeared in Alaska Quarterly Review, The Antioch Review, and The Sun. She has won a fiction grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Must Read 2012 from the Massachusetts Center for the Book.
She lives in Western Massachusetts.
