Nothing."And then she runs out of words, so she just clings to me, and not all the doctors in the world can pull her away.”

“She is sitting on frozen ground wrapped in a blanket, her pale skin shining. She smiles and she stands and without words, she steps forward, opens the blanket, envelops me within it and within her and within myself. She kisses my cheek, the one not torn, she wraps me and she holds me. Her arms are thin but strong. She whispers in my ear, "I'm glad you're here.”

“Wrapping my arms around her, I walked her backward into the brick. “Tell me you chose me, Echo.”She licked her lips. Those green eyes smoldered, calling me to her. “I chose you.”

“The room went dark and, after a moment, Grace whispered that she loved me, sounding a little sad. I wrapped my arms tightly around her shoulders, sorry that loving me was such a complicated thing.”
