“Struggling for my life, I gagged. The creature's strength unbelievable. There was nothing I could do. Its face was very close and it opened its mouth. Turning my head the opposite direction, I could feel the heat of breath on my ear. I struggled as hard as I could. It wasn't enough. Its teeth were bearing down on my neck: drool dripped soaking my collar.”

“With my eyes closed and my memories open, I could almost feel his hands and mouth on my skin.”

“I hear one of my mares scream, and I turn long enough to flip open my bag and throw a handful of salt in her direction. She jerks her head up as some of it sprinkles her face; she's offended but not hurt...I turn back to the sea, and the wind throws sand in my face, hard enough to offend but not to hurt. I smile a thin smile at the irony and turn up my collar.”

“There is no lock strong enough nor wall thick enough to keep Death out," he murmured, his lips close to my ear so that I could feel the puff of his breath against my skin. The ends of a couple of his braids had found their way under the collar of my flannel night-shirt and tickled the base of my neck."Are you speaking literally or metaphorically?”

“Replaying her words in my head, I could feel my face redden again. I wanted to flush my head down the toilet.”

“You’re unbelievable,” I snapped.“I’m yours.”That socked me in the gut too, so hard it winded me and all I could do was stare up at him. Taking advantage, his face dipped close and his hands curled around both sides of my head.“First fuckin’ time you smiled at me in my bed, that’s when it happened,” he murmured. “You’re under my skin. I’m under yours.”I shook my head and his face got even closer, all I could see were his sky blue eyes, all I could feel were his lips a breath away from mine.“I like you there, buddy, and you like me there too.”
