“f you'd crack a book, you'd appreciate the connection, but then again, you'd have to learn to read first. -Silas”
“Sorry. It means something, if it is sincere. -Monroe”
“What in life is worth a sacrifice, if not love? -Bryn”
“The road ahead is unknown to all. I cannot offer you wisdom or guidance. Only the promise that I will never leave you.”
“The path is here," he said quietly. "But you are free to walk it or choose another way.”
“To know of the existence of evil, true evil that corrupted the world, had forever altered her heart and mind. If she had chosen a different path, she wouldn't have slept another night. Her head would have been restless as she thought only of the horrors that might be creeping outside her door, waiting to rend her flesh. She would not live a life as the hunted; she would be the hunter.”
“Ember pulled his face to hers, kissing him again before she said, “Your strength gives me courage.” He smiled gently. “No, Ember, that is all your strength and none of mine.” She balked, but he kissed her, murmuring against her lips, “And that is why I love you.”
“Come on, Mowgli. Let's go kill Bambi.”
“I'd always welcomed war, but in battle, my passion rose unbidden.”
“I think a platform is missing its go-go dancer, Sabine." Fey's brutal tone cut through our courtesies.”
“Connor swooped her into his arms. “Damn it, girl.” He kissed her, curling his body around hers. “What kind of crazy stunt was that? Don't ever try to save me again.”“You were about to sacrifice yourself to protect me.” She smiled up at him. “There was no way I was going to let you get out of our relationship that easily.”
“Only Ren wasn't smiling. He was eyeing Connor suspiciously.“What?” Connor asked, frowning at the alpha.“That's my sister,” Ren growled.Connor stared at him. “I know. And I love her.”“Great,” Ren said. “But what are your intentions?”“My intentions?” Connor looked from Ren to Adne, frowning.Ren grinned, showing Connor his sharp canines. “When all this is over, you and I have a lot to talk about, too.”
“Ren sighed, but he nodded. “We're backing her up.”Mason grinned. “She is woman. Hear her roar.”
“I need my warriors whole. You made each other bleed.” I ignored Ren's bewildered expression. “Now undo the damage.”“You've got to be kidding me.” Shay grimaced.“I can't begin to tell you how much I'm not kidding.” I stepped back, folding my arms over my chest. “Until I choose a mate, I'm the only alpha here; I've made it clear that I'm not making a choice right now. You two answer to me. Prove your loyalty. Heal each other.”
“Connor smiled sadly at me. “Go on, that's where you belong.”My fangs were already sharpening when I returned his smile. “Just don't try to pet me.”
“I'll walk you to your room. I'll even sing you a lullaby . . . and maybe you could show me what makes you howl,” Connor said, a smile sliding across his mouth.“Hey!” Shay snapped out of his trance to glare at the Searcher.“Down, boy.” Connor laughed.”
“It's not babysitting,” Adne protested. “I haven't had to spank you once, which is a shame.”
“Connor has always been light to her. Pure light and hope in the face of sorrow and despair.”
“Your sweetheart isn't too happy about this," Shay said, still smiling. I looked toward the back of the room. Ren watched us, holding a pair of scissors. I'd never seen a classroom tool look so dangerous.”
“Shay opened his palm, a Hershey's Kiss rested in his hand.Mason winked at him. ''Welcome to the table, man. I hope you survive.''''I think I'll manage.'' He turned the silver-wrapped chocolate in his fingers. ''Thanks for this. There's nothing quite like a really good kiss.''His mouth crinkled in a smile and he cast me a sidelong glance, making my toes curl.”
“I stared at him. "Did you just call me an abomination?Silas looked me up and down. "Yes. Yes, I did.”
“I didn't know where love would lead me, but my pack would always be at my side. More than anything else, that was what mattered.”
“This is only about love.”
“When he kissed me again, I thought I would break apart with need. He pulled back, watching me silently. A question waited for me in his eyes. "Yes," I murmured. I kissed him again and there were no more questions to be answered.”
“Sabine stood up, satisfied that her friends were safe and content. When she moved, Calla lifted her head. Her eyes focused in Sabine's direction. Despite the distance between them, Sabine Could have sworn Calla was looking right at her. The white wolf's ears flicked back and forth. She lifted her muzzle and howled. The sound filled Sabine with a mixture of sweetness and sorrow. The other wolves joined the song, their familiar voices blending in the winter air. Sabine watched them from another minute, then she turned and walked back to Ethan."Everything okay?" he asked. She handed him the binoculars. "They're happy. So I'm happy." ... She turned, listening to the song carried on the stiff winter breeze. Nev's voice rose about the other wolves' as the chorus of howls wove through the air. Sabine wondered if somehow they knew she was here, and if they might be saying good-bye or if they were asking her to stay.”
“Guardians were made from the beasts that rule their souls, forced to share a human body so they would be servants to the Keepers.”
“When the Elemental Cross locks the Rift, it will restore the balance of nature, returning all creatures to their true essence."Shay Frowned. "What does that mean?"I stared at Anika, stunned as the truth settled into my bones. "It means we'll be wolves.”
“I turned to Ren, dropping my head low to honor the fallen alpha. The circled wolves did the same. I lifted my muzzle first, my howl singing out the pain of Ren's death, mourning him. One by one my packmates joined the song. Our howls filled the library, spilling into the winter night. The death song grew as the wolves still outside raised their voices to honor the lost young warrior. The chorus of wolf cries, full of heartache, swelled in the night, carrying Ren's memory to the very stars.”
“I love you.But he was gone.”
“As tiny silver flakes drifted down to settle on our bodies---Both the living and the dead---I thought perhaps the moon had hidden her face from us, as full of sorrow as we were. But she couldn't stop her tears from spilling out in the form of silent snow.”
“Your packmate? Ren lowered his head. My secondI'm sorry. My father rested his muzzle on Ren's shoulder.Ren whimpered softly, leaning into my father.”
“I also hold very strong personal convictions about censorship. I don't believe in forbidden knowledge.”
“You want us to go in there---seriously?" He stared at the cave. "It smells like death. Horrible, farty death.”
“What?" Connor asked, frowning at the alpha."That's my sister," Ren growled.Connor stared at him. "I know. And I love her.""Great," Ren said. "But what are your intentions?""My intentions?" Connor looked from Ren to Ande, frowning. Ren grinned, showing Connor his sharp canines. "When all this is over, you and I have a lot to talk about too.”
“Adne walked over to Connor, stretched up on her tiptoes, and placed a chaste kiss on his lips. "You're a good man after all." She smiled sadly, beginning to turn away, but Connor slid his arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet. The kiss he crushed onto her mouth was anything but chaste and lasted so long that soon we all turned away, blushing. When he finally set her down, his voice was thick. "I give up. I love you, Adne. I am crazy in love with you.”
“It's just that this outfit is much easier to deal with than that chastity contraption you had on the last time we were kissing.”
“Hang on .... Do you smell that?" "Yeah ... shit," Nev snarled, glancing at the thick jungle that surrounded us. "You smell shit?" Ethan asked. "Thanks for sharing.""No," Nev said. "We smell cats.”
“I'm sorry Silas. I'll try to make it up to you.”
“Do you still want Ren?" I listened to my own heartbeat for a minute before answering. "Yes." "That's one hot mess, Cal." Ansel smiled at me.”
“He told me how special you are," he said, flashing Shay an unfriendly smile. "Because of your great-great-times-a-hundred-grandmother Eira who got us into this mess when she became a demon's mistress." "Thanks for reminding me," Shay said. "So now you know why you and Calla were supposed to cut my throat instead of a cake at your wedding. Too bad that didn't happen." Ren Stiffened. "I'm not sorry you made it out of Vail alive. As for the rest of it ... we'll see how that turns out, won't we?”
“Silas?" I glanced from Ren to the mad-haired scholar. "He was your company?" "Still jealous?" Ren winked at me. "I was not jealous," I said. "Really?" Ren said. "So that harpy-ish tone was your normal speaking voice?”
“If you call them a sin against nature again, I will end you." Ethan's hand was on his dagger's hilt. "Look who's a born-again Guardian evangelist now." Connor laughed. "What's up with that?" A blush slid up Ethan's neck. "Nothing. They're our allies. That's all." "Sure it is." Conner said.”
“A growl rumbled behind us. "Could you not touch her?" Ren didn't make it sound like a question. "Bite me," Shay snarled. "Stop it. Both of you.”
“He is Monroe's son." I pointed at Ren. "And he's your best hope to win this war." "He's what?" Shay's voice was dead quiet. I'm what?" Ren kept his own voice to a whisper, but the look he'd thrown me was a bit alarmed.”
“The air around Shay rippled, tinged with the rusty hue of his rage. I caught the scent of Ren's own fury, sudden and violent, as he stepped in front of me, blocking Shay's approach. It was an act of possession, as unmistakable as if he'd thrown a gauntlet at Shay's feet. Ren was an alpha, and he was reclaiming his place.”
“I'm simply acting according to my current circumstance." Logan blew a smoke ring, scenting the air with tobacco and cloves. "I thought prisoners were always granted a cigarette before their execution. And since you all keep threatening to kill me, I believe I should always have this small luxury afforded to me as long as my life is a risk. Don't you?”
“He had to clear his throat before he could say, “You know, I always thought it would be cool to have a kid sister.”“Be careful what you wish for.” Adne looked up at him and grinned. “I'm kind of a brat.”Ren laughed.I couldn't help myself. “She's not kidding.”“Thanks, Lily.” Adne glared at me, but she was laughing too. “What do you say we continue trading insults where we're less likely to be in mortal peril?”“She calls you Lily?” Ren was gazing at her, astonished.I groaned. “She does.”“Great minds.” He flashed a wicked smile at me before winking at her.”
“They said I have to." "Have to what?" "Break you." ... "I don't believe you wanted to hurt me." I said. "And I don't believe you would have, even if Monroe hadn't---" ... "I wouldn't have." Ren whispered.”
“ Ren's scent was everywhere. The smoke of aged wood lingering beneath a chilled autumn sky, the smooth burn of well-worn leather, the seductive ribbon of sandalwood. I closed my eyes, letting his scent pour over me, filling me with memories.”
“Staring at the wreckage of the life we could have had, I knew it wasn't about love or Shay or the Searchers now. It was about sacrifice and redemption, loss that could have new meaning.”
